Currently the LiviPod System uses low power Bluetooth technology in order for your mobile phone to communicate directly to LiviPod.  WiFi is only required for LiviPod "over the air" firmware updates.  Your mobile phone does require access to WiFi or a cellular data plan in order to for the LiviPod App to reach our servers, but the amount of data used is nominal and in-line with most other low-data applications you likely already use on your phone.
