Currently the LiviPod System uses low power Bluetooth technology in order for your mobile phone to initiate its first communications directly to the Pod.  Once you have successfully claimed your pod using the LiviPod App, you will then go into the Settings and setup WiFi.  This will then allow your pods to communicate directly with our cloud-based system so they are always on, and the app will not have to use the shorter-range Bluetooth method of communicating unless WiFi happens to be unavailable.  

Cell phone data is only used by your smartphone if you don't have a WiFi connection; the pods do not use cellular data directly.
